Collision Research & Analysis, Inc. employs multiple methods of data acquisition, from simple hand measurements and Total Station survey equipment to more sophisticated 3-D laser scanning, of both accident scenes and vehicles. As with all data that the engineers collect, each additional piece of detail helps bring together an accurate reconstruction of the crash event.
In reconstructing a scene, all evidence and descriptions from witnesses and reports need to be verified. Total Station survey data helps to confirm information gathered from reports for accurate placement of evidence and scene details within a reconstruction diagram. It is also used in 3D scene composition to help identify slopes and grades at specific locations within a scene.
The 3-D Laser scanning that the engineers employ is used to capture full sized scaled scenes and detailed crush or impact damage to vehicles. The scanned data from the vehicles gives a comprehensive 3D view of the vehicle for further analysis after the initial vehicle inspecton. This type of data is an invaluable asset to the overall analysis of a reconstruction since it can be viewed at anytime and from any angle long after the vehicle is rendered inaccessible or destroyed.
